Sharing from NUMN in NY
• “Chinese are better at English pronunciation”. Even “not-so-fluent-speaker” like me was praised many times by delegates from Japan, France, and Spain etc. The Japanese even mistook me for exchange students already been in the USA for many years. Therefore, our HC students shouldn’t have worried too much on their adaptability in the States in the coming year^_^ Just have belief in ourselves!
• “Chinese is becoming the world’s common language”. Astonishingly, too many foreign friends can speak too fluent Chinese beyond your imagination! Like living in enchanted world, I met “old China hand” from France, Germany, and Japan. And when my friends and I were joking that we were free to say anything, a French delegate suddenly came out. With a mysterious look wearing on his face, he put his hand on my shoulder and commented “Be careful, I know what you were talking about”. The air immediately went frozen. But, delightfully, we began our conversation and the “national pride” soared/ rocked up in the sky! We were and are really proud of the prosperity of our promising China!!! The increasing number of Chinese speakers proves that China is becoming more and more attractive for other parts of the world. We are growing strong!!! Later in the conference, we went to the permanent mission of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations, and the head there also showed us statistics and diplomatic anecdotes of our wise domestic diplomats. We were even more confident for our country’s future.
• The States is amazingly “open”. However, this figure emotional hurt us Chinese mentally. For example, Dalai Lama, who aims at separating our nation, is publicized as Nobel Peace Prize Winner, a peace lover. Probably, it is because of political issue between nations. Whatsoever, the stronger our country is, the more influential power will she holds. Only if our country is big and strong enough, can we make our voice heard and win the support and respect from other countries.
